The results are in, and vanilla reigns supreme as America’s favorite ice cream flavor.

In celebration of National Ice Cream Month, which runs throughout the month of July, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) conducted a survey to find the most loved flavors from coast to coast. The IDFA tabulated the top sellers from major ice cream manufacturers in the United States including Blue Bell, Unilever, Nestle, and members of the National Ice Cream Retailers Association, which likely includes your local mom and pop ice cream shop.

Vanilla has been the top selling flavor for years, followed by chocolate, but the remaining 8 slots tend to vary. Here’s a full list:

  1. Vanilla
  2. Chocolate
  3. Cookies & Cream
  4. Mint Chocolate Chip
  5. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  6. Buttered Pecan
  7. Cookie Dough
  8. Strawberry
  9. Moose Tracks (vanilla ice cream with peanut butter cups and fudge swirls)
  10. Neapolitan

“Vanilla has long been the best-selling ice cream flavor not only because it is creamy and delicious, but also because of its ability to enhance so many other desserts and treats,” said Cary Frye, IDFA vice president of regulatory and scientific affairs said in a press release. “It tastes great topped by whipped cream and fudge sauce in a sundae, with root beer in a float or atop a warm slice of apple pie.”

The study also reveals that the Great Lakes states, including Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, consume the most ice cream. Waffle cones and sugar cones are equally popular, and ice cream sandwiches are the most popular frozen treat — beating out bars, cones, pops and cups.
