America’s most horribly unhealthy chain restaurant meals announced by watchdog group

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a national nutritional watchdog group, just released their annual list of the most shamefully caloric items on menus across American chain restaurants. Titled the Xtreme Eating Awards, the list aims to inform Americans of the amount of calories, cholesterol, fats, sodium and sugars they consume when eating out. Top honors went to The Cheesecake Factory — no stranger to lists of culinary shockers. It’s Pasta Napoletana took the “Worst Adapted Pasta” award for its 2,310 calories and 79 grams of saturated fat and shocking 4,370 milligrams of sodium — a full three days worth of the daily recommended salt intake. The dish was the brain child of Donald Moore, Chief Culinary Officer at TCF who asked in a Facebook Live video in March, “How can we turn a meat lover’s pizza into a pasta?” Moore and TCF might have been successful in their…

The secret behind the Starbucks apron colors

In 75 countries around the world, Starbucks is recognized by the color green. From its circular green logo, to the 23,000 locations with more than 300,000 employees who wear green aprons. But have you ever noticed a barista not wearing green? Maybe you saw black, orange or red. What is this secret code in Starbucks coffeehouse apparel? The apron has been a part of Starbucks since the first day it opened its doors in 1971 to Seattle’s Pike Place Market. At the time, employees wore basic brown grocer’s aprons — the same shade as the original logo. According to a post on the company’s website, by 1987 the green apron replaced the brown aprons to became the standard issue — now matching the green logo. Today, anyone working at a Starbucks can wear the company’s signature green color. But other colors are earned. If an employee has military experience or graduated from the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, they  might…

Smelling food can make you fat, new study shows

Your nose might be sabotaging your weight loss efforts. New research has revealed that simply smelling food can make you pack on the pounds. Yikes! The study, conducted by UC Berkeley researchers and published in Cell Metabolism, used three groups of mice — a set of “super-smellers,” a group whose smell was temporarily disabled, and a control group. The mice ate the same amount of a “Burger King diet.” When the mice weighed in at the end of the study, those with the impaired sense of smell gained the least weight — a mere 10 percent of their body weight, while the “super smellers” gained the most weight — nearly doubling in size. The findings show that your olfactory system affects your appetite as well as your metabolism. The normal mice, of course, ballooned in size too. “In the context of food and appetite, this is really novel,” lead study author Celine Riera told SF Gate. However,…

KFC knows you needed drumstick socks, launches online retail store

When you go to sleep at night, don’t you wish you could cuddle up with the Colonel? Now you can. KFC just launched a retail store of “finger lickin’ good” apparel and home décor. From  pillowcases printed with Sanders’ face to socks stamped with drumsticks, fast-food fans will find the items quite amusing. The fried-chicken swag starts at $8 for a pair of socks to $20 for an over-sized chicken sandwich lapel pin. A framed 11″x14″ print of KFC’s famous mashed potatoes is priced at $80. “Our fans were craving a way to embrace the fried chicken lifestyle, and KFC Ltd. gives them the opportunity to let their colonel flag fly,” said Steve Kelly, KFC U.S. director of media and digital, in a statement. Perhaps the most unusual item on the new site is a meteorite cut to look like the Zinger check sandwich. Retailing for $20,000, the item is said to be a…

8 Vegan-friendly Starbucks beverages for summer

Being vegan used to mean hauling around a purse full of food or only eating prepared meals at home. Today, it has become a whole lot easier with special menus, or at least a “V” symbol next to animal-friendly options, can have vegans dining along side any other diet or lifestyle in most urban restaurants across America. Starbucks, too, has come a long way. (Remember when crushed beetles were used as red food coloring in the Strawberry Frappuccino? Thankfully, that’s over.) While the company could do more, there are at least a handful of delicious options for vegans looking for a summertime sugar or caffeine fix at the beloved coffee giant. Caramel Frappuccino A few substitutions can make the iconic caramel frap vegan-friendly. Substitute the dairy, go “no-whip” and ask to omit the caramel drizzle as well. Unfortunately, the drizzle is made with 3 different dairy products. https://www.instagram.com/p/BV7jF0qj1JH/?tagged=veganstarbucks Strawberry Smoothie This cold, creamy…

Chick-fil-A rolling out gluten-free bun, but there’s a catch

Chick-fil-A has gone gluten free! Not entirely, but the nationwide chicken sandwich chain is poised to capitalize on its consumers’ dietary needs with a new menu offering. Chick-fil-A announced on Monday that it will offer gluten-free buns at restaurants nationwide, after reportedly receiving positive feedback from test marketed areas in 2016. The gluten-free bun is made with ancient grains quinoa and amaranth and sweetened with molasses and raisins. “We know our customers are looking for more gluten-sensitive alternatives. They asked, and we listened,” said Leslie Neslage, senior consultant of menu development at Chick-fil-A in a release on the company’s Chicken Wire. “Our hope is that the Gluten-Free Bun addition opens up options for gluten-sensitive customers to enjoy more of our menu.” The new bun can be ordered with any of the restaurant’s sandwiches. But there is one catch. Customers who order the gluten-free buns will have to assemble their sandwiches themselves. According to…

McDonald’s ending longtime Olympic partnership

McDonald’s will no longer be a “Proud Sponsor of the Olympic Games.” In a surprise move, after 41 years of partnership, the world’s largest fast-food chain is ending it’s sponsorship of the world’s largest athletic competition — three years earlier than originally planned. McDonald’s Corp. was set to sponsor the Olympics through the 2020 Games, but according to a joint press release from the International Olympic Committee and the fast-food chain, McDonald’s executives have decided to take their business in a different direction. “As part of our global growth plan, we are reconsidering all aspects of our business and have made this decision in cooperation with the IOC to focus on different priorities,” McDonald’s global chief marketing officer Silvia Lagnado said. The financial details weren’t released, but the contract extension that McDonald’s signed in 2012 was worth about $200 million, ABC News reported. “We have mutually agreed with McDonald’s to part ways.…

Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Eat On The Go

You just finished your work day but only have 30 minutes until you have to be across town for an evening event. Lunch has long worn off, and it will be hours until you get home. You’re going to have to eat this one on the run. You map out quick options along your route — the taco stand, the joint with pizza by the slice, the greasy burger restaurant. It’s just calories to get you through, but what does such careless eating do to your body? Research suggests that eating on the run is less physically satisfying. The study from the University of Surrey examined a group of women, both dieters and non-dieters. They were lead to believe the study was looking at how distraction affects food taste. The study broke the women into three group. The first, watched television while eating a cereal bar. The second had to walk around while…

Starbucks edges out Dunkin’ Donuts as American’s favorite coffee

A coffee king has been crowned for the coming year. Starbucks has taken the top spot as America’s favorite coffee, narrowly surpassing three-time honoree Dunkin’ Donuts for the Coffee and Quick Service Restaurant Brand of the Year. The Harris Poll shows that 11 percent of millennials and 10 percent of Gen X’ers visit a Starbucks daily. “Given the ever-present morning rush lines at Starbucks, the fact that millennials and Gen X make daily Starbucks runs might not be entirely surprising, but it is telling,” said Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll. “With its engaging rewards app and high-end Starbucks Reserve brand, Starbucks is proactively pursuing millennials and quite frankly, doing it better than most right now.” Restaurants continue to adapt to the millennial lifestyle and ordering methods such as Starbucks’ mobile app and rewards program could be contributing to the recent boost. The poll employed the EquiTrend…
