Chick-fil-A rolling out gluten-free bun, but there’s a catch

Chick-fil-A has gone gluten free! Not entirely, but the nationwide chicken sandwich chain is poised to capitalize on its consumers’ dietary needs with a new menu offering. Chick-fil-A announced on Monday that it will offer gluten-free buns at restaurants nationwide, after reportedly receiving positive feedback from test marketed areas in 2016. The gluten-free bun is made with ancient grains quinoa and amaranth and sweetened with molasses and raisins. “We know our customers are looking for more gluten-sensitive alternatives. They asked, and we listened,” said Leslie Neslage, senior consultant of menu development at Chick-fil-A in a release on the company’s Chicken Wire. “Our hope is that the Gluten-Free Bun addition opens up options for gluten-sensitive customers to enjoy more of our menu.” The new bun can be ordered with any of the restaurant’s sandwiches. But there is one catch. Customers who order the gluten-free buns will have to assemble their sandwiches themselves. According to…

McDonald’s ending longtime Olympic partnership

McDonald’s will no longer be a “Proud Sponsor of the Olympic Games.” In a surprise move, after 41 years of partnership, the world’s largest fast-food chain is ending it’s sponsorship of the world’s largest athletic competition — three years earlier than originally planned. McDonald’s Corp. was set to sponsor the Olympics through the 2020 Games, but according to a joint press release from the International Olympic Committee and the fast-food chain, McDonald’s executives have decided to take their business in a different direction. “As part of our global growth plan, we are reconsidering all aspects of our business and have made this decision in cooperation with the IOC to focus on different priorities,” McDonald’s global chief marketing officer Silvia Lagnado said. The financial details weren’t released, but the contract extension that McDonald’s signed in 2012 was worth about $200 million, ABC News reported. “We have mutually agreed with McDonald’s to part ways.…

Mixed Berry Pretzel Salad: Recipe & Video

Starbucks edges out Dunkin’ Donuts as American’s favorite coffee

A coffee king has been crowned for the coming year. Starbucks has taken the top spot as America’s favorite coffee, narrowly surpassing three-time honoree Dunkin’ Donuts for the Coffee and Quick Service Restaurant Brand of the Year. The Harris Poll shows that 11 percent of millennials and 10 percent of Gen X’ers visit a Starbucks daily. “Given the ever-present morning rush lines at Starbucks, the fact that millennials and Gen X make daily Starbucks runs might not be entirely surprising, but it is telling,” said Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll. “With its engaging rewards app and high-end Starbucks Reserve brand, Starbucks is proactively pursuing millennials and quite frankly, doing it better than most right now.” Restaurants continue to adapt to the millennial lifestyle and ordering methods such as Starbucks’ mobile app and rewards program could be contributing to the recent boost. The poll employed the EquiTrend…

This burger chain was just voted best burger in America

In the battle of the burger chains, it’s not the golden arches Americans are longing for. For the first time ever, Five Guys, was named Burger Restaurant Brand of the Year — ousting two-time honoree In-N-Out Burger — according to The Harris Poll. The Washington D.C. based burger joint beat out In-N-Out Burger, followed by Shake Shack, Wendy’s, Culver’s, Whataburger, McDonald’s, Sonic, Smashburger, and Steak ‘n’ Shake to take the top spot. Not surprisingly, McDonald’s still hold the highest in familiarity across all brands. “The burger brand category has become less fragmented, as regional brands expand and become available in more parts of the country,” said Joan Sinopoli, vice president of brand solutions at The Harris Poll. “This is certainly the case with Five Guys, who has shed its ‘small regional player’ designation as it expands its footprint and marketing budget along with its fandom, which is a tremendous contributor…

From the creamy color of the walls, to the hazelnut-shaped hanging lights, everything is inspired by Nutella. “It’s designed to make you feel like you’re actually walking into a jar of Nutella,” said Angela Baird, the director of operations at BIG Retail, who gave design consultation to Ferrero USA, told The Chicago Tribune. “Everything screams Nutella.” There are, of course, no shortage of Nutella menu items. Satisfy any craving with a Nutella filled croissant, waffles served with warm apples Nutella drizzle and toasted hazelnuts, or steel-cut oats topped with mixed berries, almond milk and, what else, Nutella.…

Mother’s Day is busiest day at KFC

Mom has a secret love she’s never shared all of these years. Mother’s Day is a big day for dining out. More than half of Americans celebrating Mother’s Day plan a special brunch or dinner. According to the National Retail Federation, 55.9 percent of mothers celebrating will get taken out for a special meal. But when we can assume Mom has her pick of places, where does she choose to dine? KFC. According to YUM Brands, KFC sees its best day of business all year on Mother’s Day. And it’s not even close. Single stores report sales jumps of 50 percent on the annual holiday. KFC says it serves about 370,000 families each Mother’s Day. That translates to 6.5 million pieces — or 1.5 million pounds — of chicken and 815,000 servings of mashed potatoes and gravy. So celebrate your favorite matriarch this Sunday with a box of chocolates and a bucket of…

Your favorite candy bars will have less calories by 2022

Candy companies are responding to consumer cries for healthier foods and smaller portion sizes. More than a dozen candy companies including Mars, Nestle, Ferrara, Lindt & Sprungli and Ferrero Rocher, promised the Partnership for a Healthier America, a foundation chaired by former first lady Michelle Obama, to reduce the size of 50 percent of their products to less than 200 calories by 2022, reported The Washington Post. As part of the initiative, the companies also agreed to include front-of-package nutrition information for no less than 90 percent of their products. “It’s a big commitment, and a big shift,” John Downs, chief executive of the National Confectioners Association told The Washington Post. But, he added, “obviously there’s an important and ongoing conversation around sugar in the U.S., and around the world … and our industry has been discussing how we can be a productive part of that conversation.” About 30 percent of American candies have already…
